Most credit card payoff calculators are built for a balance you've already racked up -- you type in what you owe today and it tells you how long it'll take to dig out. That's useful, but it's also too late to change your plan. Running the same math on your planned spending, before the holiday shopping actually happens, is the version that can still change the outcome.

Average holiday debt in 2026 (based on 2025 data)

According to a LendingTree survey of 2,032 US consumers in December 2025, 37% of Americans took on holiday debt that year, averaging $1,223 -- up from $1,181 the year before, and the highest since 2022. Parents with kids under 18 borrowed more often (48%) and more on average ($1,324). Nearly two-thirds of people carrying holiday debt (63%) expected it to take three months or more to pay off.

How to avoid holiday credit card debt

The advice that shows up consistently across credit unions and financial sites: set a real budget before shopping starts (including wrapping paper and shipping, not just gifts), use cash or debit where you can so spending has a hard stop, and if you do use credit, pay more than the minimum so interest doesn't compound for months. A short pause -- leaving something in the cart overnight -- also cuts down on emotional purchases that blow past the budget.

Credit card minimum payment and how long payoff really takes

The gap between a token minimum payment and a real payoff plan is bigger than most people expect, because interest is recalculated every month on whatever balance is left. A $1,223 balance at a 24% APR paid at $100/month takes well over a year when you also account for interest continuing to accrue -- worth seeing in dollars before you commit to a monthly number you might not keep up.

Budgeting for holiday spending without debt: check the cost first

The Holiday Credit Card Debt Payoff Calculator flips the usual order: enter what you're planning to spend, your card's APR, and what you can realistically pay monthly, and see months-to-payoff and total interest before you've spent a dollar -- benchmarked against the 2025 national averages above so you know if your plan is ahead of or behind where most people land.
