Home insurance non-renewals jumped up to 216% in some regions -- is your ZIP code at risk?

Getting dropped by your home insurer doesn't always follow a claim or a missed payment -- increasingly, it follows your ZIP code. Two federal-level data sources, the NAIC and the Treasury's Federal Insurance Office, have published aggregate numbers that explain why.

Why did my home insurance not get renewed?

Insurers sometimes pull back from entire ZIP codes or states due to accumulated regional risk -- wildfire, flood, or hurricane exposure across many policies -- rather than reacting to any one homeowner's individual history. That's part of why a clean claims record doesn't guarantee renewal in a high-risk area.

Home insurance non-renewal by ZIP code: the NAIC numbers

The NAIC's August 2026 report on homeowner property insurance market dynamics found non-renewal rates rose 96-216% by region between 2018 and 2024 -- the Southeast saw the sharpest increase at 216%, followed by the Northeast at 147% and the Midwest at 96%.

Is my ZIP code high risk for home insurance? The Treasury/FIO comparison

Separately, a January 2025 Treasury Federal Insurance Office report found that high-risk ZIP codes see about 80% higher non-renewal rates and 82% higher premiums than low-risk ZIP codes -- with high-risk areas averaging $2,321 a year in premiums.

A home insurance dropped / wildfire zone checker, without insurer-specific data

None of this is about any specific insurance company -- it's aggregate, publicly reported risk patterns. The Home Insurance Non-Renewal Risk Checker turns those patterns into a short checklist (disaster zone, recent claims, roof age, state risk profile) that produces a rough Low/Moderate/High risk category -- not a quote, just a self-check grounded in NAIC and FIO data.
