2027 ACA Health Insurance Premium Subsidy Calculator

The enhanced premium tax credit expired at the end of 2025 and has NOT been extended by Congress as of this tool's last update — the original 400% federal poverty level income cap is back in effect for 2027 coverage. Above that income level, there is no premium tax credit.

Look this up for your ZIP code and ages at healthcare.gov or your state exchange — it varies too much by location and age to estimate here.

Income as % of federal poverty level 0%
Estimated monthly tax credit $0
Estimated annual tax credit $0
Applicable % of income (2027 table) —

This is a simplified estimate. The real IRS formula interpolates smoothly within each income band; this calculator uses the band's upper-bound percentage as a step approximation, so your actual credit may differ slightly. It also doesn't reflect state-specific rules or the 2027 out-of-pocket maximum ($12,000 for an individual plan, confirmed by HHS). Always verify your actual amount at healthcare.gov.

Estimate your 2027 ACA premium tax credit by entering your income, household size and your plan's benchmark premium. Enhanced subsidies expired at the end of 2025 and have not been extended — the original 400% federal poverty level income cap applies again for 2027 coverage, meaning no subsidy at all above that line.

How it works

  1. Enter your household size and annual income (MAGI)
  2. Look up your area's second-lowest-cost Silver (benchmark) plan monthly premium at healthcare.gov and enter it
  3. See your estimated monthly and annual premium tax credit, or a clear notice if you're above the 400% FPL cutoff

Frequently asked questions

Have the enhanced ACA subsidies been extended for 2027?

No. The enhanced premium tax credit expired at the end of 2025. Multiple extension attempts in the Senate failed to reach the 60 votes needed as of this tool's last update, so the original pre-2021 rules — including the hard 400% federal poverty level income cutoff — are back in effect for 2027 coverage.

What happens if my income is above 400% of the federal poverty level?

Under current (non-extended) rules, you receive no premium tax credit at all above that line, regardless of how expensive your benchmark plan is. This is often called the "subsidy cliff."

Why do I have to enter my own benchmark premium instead of the tool looking it up?

The second-lowest-cost Silver plan premium varies enormously by ZIP code, county, insurer, and the ages of everyone in your household — there is no single accurate national or state average we could show you without it being misleading. Look up your actual benchmark premium at healthcare.gov or your state's exchange and enter it here.

Is this calculation exact?

No — it's a simplified estimate. The real IRS formula smoothly interpolates the applicable percentage within each income band; this tool uses a step approximation (the top of each band) since we could not reliably extract the exact interpolation table from the IRS's 2027 revenue procedure. Your real credit may differ slightly. Always confirm your exact amount at healthcare.gov.

What's the 2027 ACA out-of-pocket maximum?

$12,000 for an individual plan, confirmed by HHS in January 2026 (up from $10,600 in 2026). This is separate from your premium and represents the most you'd pay out of pocket for covered care in a year, on top of your premiums.

When is 2027 ACA open enrollment?

November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15, 2026 for coverage starting January 1, 2027; enroll between December 16, 2026 and January 15, 2027 for coverage starting February 1, 2027.
