Student Loan Forgiveness Tax Impact Calculator
A temporary tax-free rule for income-driven repayment (IDR) forgiveness expired December 31, 2025 — starting January 1, 2026, most forgiven federal student loan balances are taxed as ordinary "cancellation of debt" income at your marginal tax rate. PSLF, teacher loan forgiveness, and death/disability discharge remain tax-free by law. If your total liabilities (including the forgiven loan) exceeded your total assets right before the forgiveness, IRC §108's insolvency exclusion (claimed on IRS Form 982) can reduce or eliminate the taxable amount — enter $0/$0 above to skip this if it doesn't apply to you. Tax is estimated as the actual incremental federal tax your forgiveness adds across 2026 brackets, not a flat rate. Some states also tax forgiven debt separately. This is general information, not tax advice — a tax professional can confirm your specific situation.
Free calculator for the 2026 student loan forgiveness "tax bomb" — estimates the actual incremental federal tax on IDR forgiveness across 2026 brackets, with the insolvency exclusion (IRC §108) built in. PSLF/teacher/disability discharge correctly shown as tax-free.
How it works
- Pick whether your forgiveness is IDR/general cancellation (taxable since Jan 1, 2026) or PSLF/teacher/disability discharge (tax-free by law)
- Enter your forgiven amount, estimated AGI, and (if it applies) your total assets and liabilities for the insolvency exclusion
- See the actual incremental federal tax your forgiveness adds — computed across 2026 tax brackets, not a flat-rate estimate
Frequently asked questions
Why is student loan forgiveness taxable again in 2026?
A temporary tax-free rule for income-driven repayment (IDR) forgiveness, created by the American Rescue Plan, expired on December 31, 2025. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) did not extend it, so IDR forgiveness in 2026 or later is generally taxed as ordinary cancellation-of-debt income.
Is PSLF forgiveness taxable too?
No. Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), teacher loan forgiveness, and death or total-and-permanent-disability discharge remain tax-free at the federal level — the OBBBA specifically made the disability-discharge exclusion permanent. Some states may still tax forgiveness differently, though, including PSLF in at least one state.
What is the insolvency exclusion, and does it apply to me?
If your total liabilities (including the loan being forgiven) exceeded your total assets immediately before the forgiveness, IRC Section 108 lets you exclude some or all of the canceled debt from taxable income, claimed on IRS Form 982. It's a legitimate exclusion, but the calculation can get complex — a tax professional can help confirm eligibility.
Why does this calculator compute an "incremental" tax instead of just multiplying by a flat rate?
A flat marginal-rate estimate (forgiven amount × your tax rate) can be inaccurate if the forgiveness pushes part of your income into a higher bracket. This calculator computes your actual tax with and without the forgiven amount added and shows the difference, which is more accurate when a large forgiveness spans more than one bracket.
