Midterm voter registration deadlines 2026: how to check your state in one minute

The 2026 midterm general election is on Tuesday, November 3, and the first registration deadlines arrive within days: Alaska, Rhode Island and South Carolina close on or around October 4, and Texas, Florida and several others on October 5. Dates differ by state, which is why a quick lookup helps.

Voter registration deadline by state 2026

Most states set the deadline as a number of days before Election Day: 30 days in Texas, Rhode Island and Alaska, 29 in Florida, 25 in North Carolina and 15 in Pennsylvania. Many also set different cutoffs by method, so an online deadline can differ from a mail or in-person one. The tool shows each method for your state with a live countdown.

Early voting dates by state 2026

Early voting windows vary even more. Texas runs October 19 to 30, North Carolina October 15 to 31, and New York October 24 to November 1. A few states begin in September. Some leave the exact days to counties, so we mark those and point you to your official site.

Same day voter registration states

Twenty-two states and Washington, DC let eligible voters register in person during early voting or on Election Day, though rules differ: North Carolina allows it only during early voting, and Rhode Island only for presidential elections. Bring proof of residence where required.

Midterm voter registration deadline: what if you are unsure?

Where our sources disagreed about a date, the tool says "check your state official site" instead of guessing. That is deliberate: a wrong date harms real people. Always confirm with your state election office; vote.gov links to each state's official page.

Register to vote after the deadline: your options

If the deadline has passed, same-day registration may still work in your state. If it does not, you can still check whether you are already registered and plan for the next election. This tool is non-partisan and says nothing about candidates, parties or ballot measures.
