Thanksgiving calorie headlines are everywhere, but a single average hides how different plates are. This post and the tool use USDA values and a no-guilt tone.
How many calories in a Thanksgiving dinner
The Calorie Control Council, an industry group, has estimated about 3,000 calories for the meal, and about 4,500 across the day once appetizers, drinks and dessert are counted. Other estimates are lower, and none of them knows what you put on your plate.
Thanksgiving plate calories from USDA data
Per USDA FoodData Central, three ounces of roasted white-meat turkey is about 125 calories, a cup of mashed potatoes made with milk and butter about 237, and a slice of pumpkin pie about 323. A modest plate of turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, green beans, a roll and pie lands around 1,270 calories in our default build.
Calories in Thanksgiving dishes: portion matters most
Pecan pie is about 407 calories per 100 grams versus 237 for apple pie, but the difference between a half portion and a double portion of anything is larger still. The tool lets you set each dish in half-servings.
Thanksgiving calorie calculator: reading the share of a day
The result is shown as a share of the 2,000-calorie reference day printed on U.S. Nutrition Facts labels, which is a label convention rather than a personal target.
How much weight do you gain on Thanksgiving
One meal is not what moves the scale. In a well-known NIH study of 195 adults, average weight gain across the whole holiday period was about 0.4 kg, less than commonly assumed.
