A common frustration with YouTube thumbnail downloaders: the highest-resolution option fails or comes back broken. In most cases that's not a tool failure — YouTube simply never generated that size for that particular video, usually because of what quality the uploader provided in the first place.
YouTube thumbnail downloader HD — and honest about what's actually there
This downloader checks all 5 standard resolution tiers (120×90 up to 1280×720) for a given video and shows you exactly which ones exist — a size the video doesn't have is marked "not available" instead of showing a broken image icon.
Download YouTube thumbnail, no watermark, no scraping
YouTube thumbnails live at predictable URLs; this tool just checks and links to them directly — no API key, no watermark added, no server involved.
Why maxresdefault is sometimes missing
It depends entirely on what the video's uploader provided — auto-generated or lower-quality uploads often max out at a smaller tier. That's a YouTube-side fact, not something any downloader tool can change.
