The percentage applies to your whole AGI, not just the slice inside the tier, so the payment steps up each time AGI crosses a $10,000 line.

Other RAP rules that matter

  • Principal match: if your payment cuts the principal by less than $50 in a month, the Department of Education reduces the principal by up to $50 total for that month.
  • Forgiveness: any balance left after 360 qualifying monthly payments (30 years) is cancelled.
  • Marriage: your spouse's income counts only if you file jointly.
  • Which loans: RAP is open from July 1, 2026. It is not available for excepted loans such as Parent PLUS loans.

Your actual payment depends on your loans and servicer. Use the official Federal Student Aid Loan Simulator before choosing a plan.

Rules last verified: October 9, 2026, against 20 U.S.C. § 1087e(q) and the studentaid.gov repayment plan pages. Some third-party sites describe a "1% minimum"; the statute sets a $10 monthly minimum, which this calculator uses.

Educational estimate, not financial advice. It uses your AGI and dependents only; RAP payments do not depend on your loan balance. Your servicer recalculates your payment each year from your updated tax information. Compare plans in the official simulator before you enroll.

Enter your AGI and dependents to see your monthly payment under the new federal Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP), step by step: the income tier, the $50-per-dependent reduction and the $10 minimum.

How it works

  1. Set your AGI (combined if you file jointly) and the number of dependents you claim
  2. See the income tier, the base payment, the dependent reduction and your monthly RAP payment
  3. Check the tier table to see where the next $10,000 of income would raise the payment, then confirm in the official Loan Simulator

Frequently asked questions

How is the RAP payment calculated?

For AGI above $10,000 the yearly base is a percentage of your whole AGI: 1% for $10,001 to $20,000, rising one point per $10,000 to 10% above $100,000. For AGI of $10,000 or less it is a flat $120. Divide by 12, subtract $50 for each dependent, and the result cannot be below $10 a month. Source: 20 U.S.C. 1087e(q)(4)(B).

Is there a 1% minimum payment?

No. Some third-party sites mention a 1% floor, but the statute sets a $10 monthly minimum. The 1% tier of the table can compute to less than $10 (for example 1% of $15,000 is $12.50 a month, and 1% of $10,001 is $8.33, which is raised to $10).

Does my loan balance change the payment?

No. The RAP payment depends on AGI and dependents, not on how much you owe. The plan also reduces your principal by up to $50 a month if your payment would otherwise cut it by less (20 U.S.C. 1087e(q)(2)(B)).

Whose income counts if I am married?

Your spouse's income counts only if you file a joint return. If you are married and file separately, only your own AGI is used, and only the dependents you claim on that return reduce the payment.

When is my balance forgiven?

After 360 qualifying monthly payments, which is 30 years of payments (20 U.S.C. 1087e(q)(1)).

Is this the official estimate?

No. Use the Federal Student Aid Loan Simulator at studentaid.gov for an estimate based on your actual loans. This page only models the payment formula.
