Candy is part of Halloween. This turns what is in your bag into minutes of movement, out of curiosity and not as a penalty. You do not have to earn any of it.

One night of candy does not define your health

Eating well and moving are habits over weeks and months, not a ledger for one holiday. If you enjoy a treat, enjoy it. If you like a walk after trick-or-treating, the table above shows how much a walk adds up to. Neither choice is good or bad.

How it is calculated

Energy = MET × body weight in kg × hours, so minutes = calories × 60 ÷ (MET × kg). A 160 lb (72.6 kg) person walking briskly (4.3 MET) uses about 312 kcal an hour, so one 42-calorie Snickers mini equals about 8 minutes. These are gross values that include the calories you would use sitting still, and real numbers vary by person.

Calories per piece are the label values stored in USDA FoodData Central (kcal per 100 g times the label serving size, divided by pieces per serving). Brands change recipes and sizes, so a bag's label wins. Activity values are from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the candy calories come from?

USDA FoodData Central branded-food records, which store the nutrition label values brands submit. For each candy the calculator multiplies kcal per 100 g by the label serving size and divides by pieces per serving, for example Snickers Minis at 472 kcal per 100 g and 36 g for 4 pieces is about 42 kcal each. The FDC IDs are listed on the page.

How are the minutes worked out?

Calories = MET x body weight in kg x hours, using MET values from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities: walking at 2.8 to 3.2 mph 3.5, walking at 3.5 mph briskly 4.3, general dancing 7.8 and jogging 7.0. Minutes = calories x 60 / (MET x kg). These are gross values that include resting energy.

Do I need to burn off my Halloween candy?

No. The calculator is for curiosity, not for penance. One night of candy does not define your health, and eating well and moving are habits over weeks and months.

Why are only nine candies listed?

Each one is a USDA FoodData Central record with a known serving size and piece count. More candies will be added as records are verified.

Is this accurate for me?

It is an estimate. Calories per piece vary by brand, size and recipe, and people burn different amounts at the same pace. Use the label on your bag when you have it.

Who should not use it?

People managing an eating disorder or a medical condition may find calorie counts and exercise trade-offs unhelpful. Talk to a health professional instead.
