The federal EV tax credit isn't being phased out or reduced in 2026 — it's simply gone. The $7,500 new-EV credit and $4,000 used-EV credit both ended October 1, 2025 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, years ahead of their original scheduled expiration.

EV tax credit 2026, what's actually left

Not much at the federal level: the main remaining option is the Auto Loan Interest Deduction, which lets buyers deduct up to $10,000/year in loan interest on a U.S.-assembled vehicle (financed 2025-2028) — worth roughly $2,200-$3,700 in total tax savings depending on income and loan size. That's a deduction, not a credit, so it's worth meaningfully less than the $7,500 that used to apply at the point of sale. Some states still run their own independent EV incentive programs.

Is an EV still worth it without the tax credit?

On a typical comparison — a $42,000 EV against a $32,000 comparable gas car, 15,000 miles a year, 2026's national average electricity rate (18.34¢/kWh) and gas price ($4.17/gallon) — the EV saves about $5,650 in fuel costs over 5 years, but the $10,000 higher purchase price means the gas car still comes out around $4,350 cheaper overall in total cost of ownership. Higher annual mileage changes that math quickly: at 25,000 miles/year, fuel savings jump to roughly $9,400 over the same period, closing much of the gap.

EV vs gas cost calculator, why mileage is the deciding factor

Since the tax credit is gone, the case for an EV now rests entirely on how much it's actually driven and how big the local electricity-vs-gas price gap is — there's no longer a flat $7,500 thumb on the scale. Running the actual numbers for a specific mileage, price gap, and ownership period gives a real answer instead of a generic one.
