In 2021, the National Kidney Foundation and American Society of Nephrology jointly recommended a new, race-free version — now the current clinical standard used by labs and providers, replacing the older formula.

For a 40-year-old male with a serum creatinine of 1.0 mg/dL, the 2021 equation estimates a GFR of 97.6 mL/min/1.73m² — solidly in the normal range. A 40-year-old female with a creatinine of 0.8 estimates to 95.5, also normal, reflecting the formula's separate coefficients by sex.

GFR results map to KDIGO stages from G1 (normal, 90+) down to G5 (kidney failure, under 15) — but chronic kidney disease staging requires results confirmed over at least 3 months. A single reading can be affected by dehydration, recent exercise, or lab variation, so always discuss real results with a healthcare provider.
