Before building Payback Period Calculator, we checked calculator.net's payback period calculator directly — it's genuinely thorough, supporting both fixed and irregular cash flows, plus discounted payback with a configurable rate.

Discounted payback period calculator, and why the two numbers differ

Take a $10,000 investment returning $3,000 a year for 5 years. Simple payback period says 3.33 years — just adding raw cash flows until they cover the $10,000. But money in year 4 isn't worth the same as money today. Discount those same cash flows at 8% first, and payback stretches to 4.03 years. Neither number is "wrong" — they answer slightly different questions, and this tool shows both side by side instead of making you pick one.

Irregular cash flow payback, pasted as a list

Paste any pattern of annual cash flows, one per line — they don't need to be equal amounts. A project with a slow first year and bigger later returns works exactly the same way as an even $3,000-a-year stream.

The full cumulative table — simple and discounted, side by side, year by year — is always shown, not hidden behind a toggle you have to remember to open.
