Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
Your marginal rate is what you pay on your last dollar of income — the bracket you're 'in'. Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your total income, which is always lower because progressive brackets only tax each portion of income at its own rate, not your whole income at the top rate.
Does this include state taxes?
No — this calculates federal income tax only, using the 2026 IRS brackets. State income tax, FICA (Social Security and Medicare), and local taxes are separate and not included here.
