Count characters, words, sentences, and paragraphs in real time, and preview how your text actually looks as a Twitter/X post, a Google search snippet, or an Instagram caption — with each platform's logo right on the preview so you know exactly which limit you're checking.

How it works

  1. Paste or type your text into the box
  2. Character, word, sentence, and paragraph counts update instantly
  3. Scroll to Platform limits to see a live preview of your text as a Twitter/X post, a Google search result snippet, and an Instagram caption — including where each one cuts off

Frequently asked questions

What is the Twitter/X character limit?

280 characters for most accounts (verified/paid accounts can post longer).

How long should a meta description be?

Around 150-160 characters is a safe target so it doesn't get cut off in search results.

Does the character count include spaces?

You can toggle spaces on or off for the main character count. Platform limits (Twitter/X, meta description, Instagram) always count spaces, since that's how those platforms count them.

Why is this count different from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?

Each tool counts spaces, punctuation, and line breaks slightly differently. This tool counts every visible character by default (toggle to exclude spaces) and counts words by whitespace-separated groups. If your numbers don't match another tool, check whether spaces are included there too.

Does the Instagram preview show the real feed cutoff?

Yes. Instagram's feed truncates captions at roughly 125 characters before showing "... more," even though the hard limit is 2,200 characters. The preview shows both — the visible part before the cutoff, and the counter above it against the full 2,200-character limit.

Update history

  • 2026-09-09 Renamed from "Word Counter" to "Word Counter for Social Media" so the platform-preview feature is clear from the title alone, and added each platform's logo (X, Google, Instagram) next to its preview so it's immediately obvious which limit you're looking at.
  • 2026-08-30 Added: a cover image — used as the card thumbnail, social share image, and blog title image.
  • 2026-08-29 Fixed: Embed button now works (it silently did nothing before — Astro module scripts made document.currentScript unreliable) and the generated iframe snippet points at the correct /embed/{category}/{slug} URL instead of a 404. Removed: "API" share button — it linked to /api/v1/{slug}, which doesn't exist on this static site and always 404'd. Will return once a real API is built.
  • 2026-08-28 Added: live preview for each platform limit — see your text rendered as a Twitter/X post, a Google search snippet, and an Instagram caption (including the ~125-character feed cutoff), not just a number.
  • 2026-08-28 Launched: word/character/sentence/paragraph counter with platform limit presets (Twitter/X, meta description, Instagram caption).
