Before building our word counter, we used the most popular free alternative (wordcounter.net) the way someone writing a tweet or a meta description actually would.
A generic counter, not a Twitter/X character count checker
It counts characters and words fine, but it has no idea what you're writing for. There's no way to see "is this under the Twitter/X limit" without doing the subtraction yourself — you get a number, and you're on your own for what that number means for the platform you're actually posting to.
Our counter checks your text against three limits as you type: Twitter/X posts (280 characters), meta descriptions (155 characters), and Instagram captions (2,200 characters) — each one shows how many characters you have left, or how many you're over, in green or red.
A meta description length checker that's actually built in
The 150-160 character guideline for meta descriptions is common knowledge among anyone who writes them, but most general-purpose counters don't surface it — you have to remember the number and check manually. Ours treats it as a first-class preset, not something you have to know in advance.
Instagram caption character limit — and the number that actually matters
Instagram allows up to 2,200 characters per caption, so the platform limit itself is rarely the constraint. The tighter, more practical number is that Instagram's feed truncates captions at roughly 125 characters before showing "... more." Our preview shows both: the 2,200-character hard limit in the counter, and a live rendering of exactly what's visible before the "more" cutoff — not just a character count you have to interpret yourself.
No unrelated upsells in the counter itself
The tool we tested has a "Grammarly Pro 20% off" banner and a "GO BASIC" upgrade button sitting right next to the count, and some features (autosave, writing goals) are login-gated. Our counter doesn't try to sell you anything or ask you to sign in — every feature described on this page is available with no account.
Why your count might not match Word or Google Docs
Different tools handle spaces, punctuation, and line breaks differently, which is the usual reason an essay word counter and a general online counter disagree on the same text. Ours counts words by whitespace-separated groups and lets you toggle whether spaces count toward the character total — check that toggle first if your numbers don't match another tool.
