Frequently asked questions
How do I convert 7 hours 45 minutes to decimal?
Divide the minutes by 60: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7 hours 45 minutes = 7.75 decimal hours.
Why can't I just write the minutes after the decimal point?
Minutes are base-60, not base-10 — "38 hours 20 minutes" is not 38.20. It's 38 + (20÷60) = 38.33. Writing 38.20 by mistake underpays about 8 minutes of wages.
What rounding does US payroll law allow?
The FLSA permits rounding to the nearest 5 minutes, nearest one-tenth of an hour (6 minutes), or nearest quarter hour (15 minutes) — 15 minutes is the maximum allowed increment.
